Young Animators & Farmers

Young Animators

A young animator is a secondary school boy or girl, of farmers’ parentage, between the age of 13 and 20 years, involved in farming activities, trained and empowered to use information and communication technologies (ICTs) devises- computers, internet, mobile phone and the likes, on how to disseminate improved farm practices to farmers with whom they are trained to work for the overall goal of increasing farm productivity.

Roles of Young Animators

  • They receive information on improved farm practices from the extension agents for the purpose of disseminating them to the farmers using mobile phones and internet devices.
  • They disseminate information to farmers immediately it is received from the extension agents.
  • They sensitize extension workers and farmers to appreciate the use of ICT devices for enhancing farm productivity.

How the Young Animators' Club Operates

Young animators’ club should have:

  • At least ten members from Senior Secondary School class in a rural school within the farming communities.
  • Elected club officers – President, Secretary and Treasurer.
  • At least five farmers allocated to a young animator within his or her neighborhood.
  • A school based YAC coordinator (Agricultural Science Teacher)
  • A school based ICT coordinator
  • Regular link with the agricultural extension agent in their domain.
  • Regular fortnightly meeting in the ICTs Resource Centre to update members on improved practices in farming for the purpose of disseminating to their farmers.
  • A yearly community based campaign programme on ICTs’ awareness and appreciation to be planned by the young animators, their farmers, Extension Agents with the support of the ICT coordinator under the supervision of YAC coordinator.

Why we need Young Animators' Club.

  • In-school farm youth, who are mostly farmers’ children, have been identified as good potential information sources for their parents because of their higher literacy level as compared with their parents.
  • It is then believed that the introduction of ICTs would not only bridge the communication gap between farm families, extension and potential buyers, it will also offer farmers unlimited access to global markets

Principles guiding Young Animators

  • Members must be of farmer’s parentage
  • Members must have been involving in farming activities
  • Members must be willing to learn how to use any information and communication technologies device
  • The club emphasizes ICTs usage in assisting farmers for accessing information on improved farm practices
  • The club is based in rural schools within a farming communities
  • Members must be willing to work with farmers and extension agents
  • A young animator must not use the time for academic activities for club activities
  • He or she must be of good character and morals.
